Latte/Cappuccino at Home (without Espresso Machine)
Watch James Hoffman, the guru of all coffee geeks, guide you through this recipe here.
You’ll need
- Aeropress or Moka pot
- French Press (for frothing the milk)
- Coffee (fine grind)
- Milk (dairy milk, or barista versions of non-dairy milks)
- Scale (preferably)
Method
Make an espresso. As most of us don’t have an espresso machine at home, a great substitute is to use the Aeropress or Moka Pot for brewing a “fake espresso”. We’ll need a strong base for the coffee drink so it’s not too milky.
-If using an Aeropress, use 18g of finely ground medium/dark roast coffee and brew with 90ml/g (3oz) of water. It’s possible to make two drinks at once. Just double the ingredients (36g coffee with 180 ml/g (6oz) of water).
Warm about 125 ml (4.2 oz) of milk. Whole milk or even “half and half (equal parts whole milk and heavy cream) give the most reliable results that mix beautifully with the coffee. Alternative milks can work too but preferably the ‘barista’ versions. (I like adding a little dash of coconut milk to whole milk). Try not to overheat the milk as it will change irreversibly after reaching 65°C (149°F).
Froth the milk using a French press.
Pour the milk over your espresso base, practicing your latte art if you feel like it. Enjoy!
